Marcos Ambrose’s wildcard entry in December’s Sydney 500 will sport the #66.
According to the team, the #66 has been chosen in recognition of Ambrose’s 66th round start in the V8 Supercars Championship.
Ambrose competed in the category full-time for five seasons from 2001 before heading to the United States.
The #66 has also been used by Team Penske in various stages of its history, including for its first Indianapolis 500 victory with driver Mark Donohoue in 1972.
Penske’s maiden appearances in Formula 1, with Donohue in 1974, and the Indy Racing League, with Gil de Ferran in 2001, also utilised the number.
Ambrose’s Sydney wildcard was announced last month and comes ahead of his full-time return to V8 Supercars next season with DJR Team Penske.
As previously reported, Ambrose will enjoy three tests prior to Sydney, including an initial hit-out at Lakeside just days after Homestead’s NASCAR season finale.
“I have a few races to go to finish off my NASCAR career but then I am jumping straight on the plane to get some testing and track time with the DJR Falcon prior to Sydney,” said Ambrose.
“I have been knocked out by the interest this has generated and the response from the fans has been terrific.
“Sydney is going to be a tough re-entry but I can’t wait.”
Ambrose, who campaigned the #4 during his entire first V8 Supercars foray with Stone Brothers Racing, will carry the #17 next year.
The #66 was seen in V8 Supercars as recently as last year, when Russell Ingall used the number during his final season in Walkinshaw Racing’s Supercheap Auto backed entry.
