Fernando Alonso will be leaving Ferrari at the end of the season according to former president Luca Di Montezemolo.
Although yet to confirm his plans for next year, reports regarding Alonso's departure from the prancing horse outfit have been circulating the paddock since the Japanese Grand Prix.
However, in an interview with Italian television, Montezemolo confirmed that the double world champion will exit the team in search of a new challenge.
“Alonso is leaving for two reasons: One, he wants another environment. Two, because he is an age when he cannot wait to win again,” Montezemolo told Italian TV network RAI.
Alonso's destination remains unclear although it is widely believed he will join McLaren following reports he has already agreed a deal with the Woking's teams new 2015 engine supplier Honda.
Another option being tabled is for Alonso to take a sabbatical next season and join Mercedes in 2016.
Red Bull Racing's Sebastian Vettel is expected to replace Alonso at Ferrari although the four-time world champion is yet to confirm his 2015 plans despite announcing an end to his career at the Milton Keynes team.
Christian Horner spoke openly about Vettel's move to Ferrari in Suzuka.
