Major upgrades to the most famous racetrack in Australia, Bathurst, have stepped up another gear with the commencement of resurfacing work.
The famous ribbon of bitumen that stretches 6.213km will be resurfaced as part of $6 million in safety and infrastructure upgrades instigated by the Bathurst Regional Council and the Federal Government's Regional Development Fund.
Council plans to have the entire length of the track resealed by December, leaving the new surface time to cure ahead of the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour from February 7-9.
The upgrade is expected to significantly improve grip levels for competitors, with the current surface having been laid in late 2001.
The resurfacing work, which has commenced in the pit straight, is being carried out at a cost of $2 million with 6,000 tons of hot mix to be used for the project.
Work already completed at the mountain track includes 850m of concrete barrier fencing along pit straight and at The Chase, as well as 570m of catch fencing on the pit straight. Those works were completed prior to last month's Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
Meanwhile, the Bathurst council recently launched a public competition to name new internal roads in and around the famous venue.
The council is offering the public the chance to put forward the names of bike or car racing legends as part of the competition, which runs until the end of the month.
