Selected sections of the Sydney Motorsport Park racing facility will receive their own unique names in a new initiative from the Australian Racing Drivers’ Club.
The newly-refurbished and extended western Sydney circuit will have most of its straights, corners and circuit variants named after famous drivers and moments from the track’s history.
The first of the names will be unveiled at the Muscle Car Masters meeting next weekend, where one of the track’s four circuit variants will be named, plus two other ‘places’ at the track.
One of the places is expected to be the main straight.
The four different circuit configurations currently operate under the names of the North, South, GP and extended circuit.
Sydney Motorsport Park’s CEO Glenn Matthews said that the circuits – and particular corners – will receive their own identities.
“Not only will the corners be renamed, but the straights and the different configurations of the circuit will also get their own names,” Matthews confirmed to Speedcafe.com.
“There is a lot of Australian motorsport history to celebrate at this track, whether they are incidents or legends of the sport, and some of those legends are ARDC members as well.”
The names allocated thus far have been approved by the ARDC board, voted by a select group of journalists and officials.
Matthews said that fans will be able to have their say in the some of the remaining sections of track.
“We’re inviting the punters to help us name parts of the circuit,” Matthews said.
“It really is aimed at getting people engaged with the venue. They will be able to have their say on our website soon.”
