Jorge Lorenzo dominated the Italian MotoGP

Jorge Lorenzo has extended his lead in the MotoGP World Championship by taking a commanding victory in the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello.

Lorenzo took the lead from pole-sitter Dani Pedrosa when the Repsol Honda rider ran wide at the first corner, and was not headed for the duration.

Lorenzo eventually greeted the chequered flag 5.2s in front of Pedrosa after taking time to wave to the crowd on the final lap.

Andrea Dovizioso got the better of race-long opponent Stefan Bradl to score a popular podium on home soil.

The duo’s battle was momentarily broken up by Nicky Hayden on the final lap, with the Ducati rider passing Bradl before running wide at the following corner while the German successfully attempted to reverse the manoeuvre.

The drama allowed Valentino Rossi to secure fifth, while Cal Crutchlow would also pounce on the American in the closing metres to take sixth.

Casey Stoner could manage no better than eighth after a difficult weekend. The Australian ran sixth mid-race before dropping as low as 10th with a trip through the gravel at Turn 12.

Hector Barbera and Alvaro Bautista struggled to ninth and 10th respectively, while Ben Spies spent much of the race battling top CRT rider Randy de Puniet en route to 11th.

Lorenzo’s fifth win of the season sees him 19 points clear of Pedrosa in the championship standings, with Stoner a further 18 points adrift in third.

The championship continues in two weeks time with the United States Grand Prix at Laguna Seca.
