Australian viewers chose V8 Supercars over the Presidents Cup Golf tournament this past weekend.
According to OzTAM, the Norton 360 Sandown Challenge, shown live on the Seven Network, out-rated the international PGA tournament.
The V8 Supercars race beat the golf by 23,000 viewers on Saturday and 118,000 viewers on Sunday.
In addition to V8s' overall audience win, the Sandown Challenge out-rated the Presidents Cup in key demographics both days – even among people in the highest income earning group, OG1, on Sunday and was within 1,000 viewers in that category on Saturday.
Sunday's V8 Supercars race ranked 18th in the top programs (total people) compared to the golf at 23rd.
V8 Supercars Chairman Tony Cochrane was overwhelmed with the TV audience figures.
“To win a bigger overall audience, and perform so strongly in key demographics against the much-hyped Presidents Cup with millions of State Government funds tipped into the golf, demonstrates the passion and loyalty of V8s fans,” Cochrane said.
“This result against an international PGA tournament enhances an already outstanding performance for V8 Supercars this season with our TV ratings up on last year.”
