In mixed weather conditions, Sonic Motor Racing drivers Nick Foster and Cameron Waters have topped the practice time sheets for Round 5 of the Australian Formula Ford Championship at Sandown Raceway today.
Foster, currently second in the title, set the fastest time when track conditions improved in Practice 2, edging out team-mate and championship leader Waters.
“It was a good day, we got lucky with the weather in the second session, and it's really going to be a deciding factor tomorrow,” Foster said.
“The first session was all about getting the last lap right, we know we have speed in the dry, so it's going to be very interesting.”
For Waters, ending the day only 0.1s behind Foster put him in good stead for qualifying.
“I was pretty happy with the last session in the dry, I just didn't quite get the most out of the car,” Waters said.
“But I'm confident, the car has a very good set-up for tomorrow.”
The first session saw drivers greeted by a soaked track, with a dry line emerging towards the end of proceedings.
Caleb Rayner put experience gained in a recent state championship round at Sandown Raceway to good use by posting the fastest time.
“We've been playing around with the car, and it paid off as the track started to dry in the first session,” Rayner said.
“I was the first car to cross the finish line at the finish, and I was surprised the time was able to hold up.”
Trent Harrison set the third fastest time of the day, with Mygale's filling the top five positions. The first of the Spectrum drivers was Liam Sager in sixth.
Formula Ford action continues at Sandown tomorrow and Sunday as part of the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships.
