The uniforms for the Miss V8 Supercars at this year’s Armor All Gold Coast 600 were unveiled this morning at Burleigh Beach.
V8 Supercar drivers Jamie Whincup and Alex Davison crashed through the waves on jet skis to escort the girls to their first public showing of the locally inspired, designed and manufactured outfits.
Armor All Gold Coast 600 General Manager Shane Howard said the look was designed to connect the Miss V8 Supercars program with the iconic Gold Coast event and V8 Supercars’ official ambassador P!nk.
“These fantastic designs combine elements of fun and glamour as well as having a sporty and edgy feel – precisely what P!nk, and the Gold Coast, epitomises every day,” said Howard.
“Our very own Gold Coast designer, Karen Neilsen has done a great job of creating what we were looking for – a design that reflects the essence of the great place in which we live and do business, while providing the Miss V8 Supercars girls with something unique and fun to wear during our event.”
Born and bred on the Gold Coast, Karen Neilsen has been designing swimwear for the past 13 years following a career as a model. The winner of six RAQ Fashion Awards came up with the cut-away style black and pink swimsuit, and the grid outfit featuring a black and pink vest paired with silver shorts and black boots.
The swimsuit will be used in photographic and catwalk appearances, while the grid suit will be worn on track throughout the October 22-24 event.
“The ‘Rock Star’ concept, combining 80s fashion with functionality, has come about after lots of research and working within a brief to come up with something for a new generation of girls for Surfers Paradise,” said Neilsen.
“The story for the grid outfit incorporates a leather look vest, with a laced eyelet front and silver GT stripes and stars, teamed with silver hot pants with rouched sides and boots, topped off with a leather look cuff featuring the GT stripe, and stars with laced eyelets.
”Keeping with the concept of ‘Rock Star’, the swimsuit also features racing stripes and stars, giving the girls a fresh new look, and presenting a modern approach for a new generation of race-goers.”
V8 Supercar reigning Champion Jamie Whincup said he thought the new designs would bring a sporty and fun edge to the look of the Armor All Gold Coast 600.
“The event has been reinvented and is already generating a real sense of excitement throughout the V8 Supercar field, so I think it’s good that they’ve come up with a great new-look for the girls.”
The Miss V8 Supercars grid girls of the Armor All Gold Coast 600 will be part of the official search for the Face of V8 Supercars.
The competition is conducted during selected rounds of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, with auditions held before each round followed by a competition at the respective event. The audition process features photographic, interview and swimwear appraisals for contestants by organisers. Miss V8 Supercars organisers will be auditioning for contestants in the last week of August for the Armor All Gold Coast 600. For more information, visit www.missv8supercars.com.au
The Armor All Gold Coast 600 will feature 18 international drivers alongside the V8 Supercar stars by day, and 16 International and Australian acts by night, in a continuance of V8 Supercars’ highly successful Rock ‘n’ Race format.
