V8 Supercars will add an extra practice session for non-primary drivers to this year’s Queensland Raceway and Sydney Motorsport Park events.
The latest in a series of format tweaks this season, the additional 30 minute sessions will be run prior to the two 60 minute Friday hit-outs.
Teams have been able to field non-primary drivers during Friday practice at all Super Sprint events this year.
Running an additional driver, however, directly eats into the practice time for the primary pilot to set-up the car for the weekend’s racing.
Although the extra sessions will take place at the event’s leading up to the Pirtek Enduro Cup, V8 Supercars competition director Damien White stresses that any non-primary driver will be eligible.
“It’s listed as an additional driver session as it’s not specifically for a teams’ nominated Enduro Cup co-drivers,” he said.
“Teams can certainly use it for them, however the option is there if a team wants to nominate someone out of the V8 Supercars Dunlop Series for example.”
Teams will be permitted to use tyres from the Australian Grand Prix in the extra sessions, having had to return the three sets of hard compound rubber to Dunlop following the March event.
